May You Erode My Culture Please?
I write this post with…. Strong emotion. It’s something that I’ve observed for quite sometime and it infuriates me just thinking about it. Whatever though, personal feelings aside, it must still be said.
It seems as Malawians, we have forgotten who we are. Tiku matengeka (we’re getting carried away) with Western culture. And before you people bash me or leave unsavoury...
Nigeria Flag
soulofawarrior:
The Nigeria Flag consists of three equal bands of green, white and green. The three tri-colored bands of the Nigerian Flagare arranged vertically to each other with the white band lying in the middle of the two green bands. The green color in the flag of Nigeria stands for the lush green forests and agricultural wealth of the country. The white band represents peace and unity...
The Beauty Of Africa: Nigerian Movie →
soulofawarrior:
If there is a hospital scene, you will only see one nurse, one doctor, and the person in a regular bed (no hospital bed with rails) and one IV (drip). The person could have been in a serious car wreck or shot up 50 times and will still manage to survive on that one drip!
If there is a main…
Hahaha, soooo truue!

Saturday's Child By Countee Cullen
Some are teethed on a silver spoon, With the stars strung for a rattle; I cut my teeth as the black racoon— For implements of battle. Some are swaddled in silk and down, And heralded by a star; They swathed my limbs in a sackcloth gown On a night that was black as...

Nsima
Maize is a staple food here in Malawi. So with maize flour, we make what we call nsima. I don’t think there’s an English translation for this.
Nsima is basically a national dish, I know not of a single Malawian who does not eat it or has never had it. Lol. The photo is one I found on Google. I chose this particular photo because it also shows the chambo fish, native to Lake Malawi....

Mental Illness; Possibly A Malawian Taboo
Well I was browsing the internet and I came across a Western article on bi-polar disorder and it really got me thinking. I know for a fact that mental conditions are rarely spoken about in Malawian society.
It kills me to know that there are so many homes that just turn a blind eye to it all. I mean, you see your child/mother/sister/brother or whoever suffering and you actually CHOOSE to stay...

Chinese Astrology
I remember when I was in primary school, should be in Year Four or Year Five, we did a segment on Chinese astrology and years. We learnt then story of how the years were ordered the way they are. It was a rather fascinating story and I am compelled to share it. I was born in the year of the dog I think.
“Long ago, in China, the Jade Emperor decided there should be a way of measuring...

And I Counted The Moments
It’s been a minute since I cried;
A month since you said you loved me;
A week since you said you didn’t anymore.
Trust
Another senyru. About fake friends and how they do not deserve a person as awesome as I.
Not because I can’t.
Not because I don’t want to.
You’re just not worthy.

I Died With You; Why Am I Still Alive?
At the edge
the reaper stood, in his grim, haunting misery.
My eyes, they pleaded
and my heart, it bleeded
yet it all seemed in bitter vain.
Who would have thought,
who would have ever thought
you would so easily give in?
He opened his bronze urn,
the home in which your soul would remain,
and sucked up the life you had left.
And as still as a windless night,
your heart became,
loose was your last...

In This Moment-Poem By WeGottaBleeder On The Young...
I discovered this poem when I logged into the Young Writers Society last night. I simply had to share it. It’s too beautiful to keep all to myself.
Into the broken moment when All things must be For now, or for not This is not the time And hardly the place Here we are Yet it seems and yet it seems That the giving is not done A shattered ship Sits and harbors A Lady in waiting She comes to...

The Chitenje And How To Wear It
This is a woman wearing a traditional cloth. They are known as a nsalu or a chitenje. They are just basically to wear… whenever! Also to cover yourself.
In our culture, showing skin is frowned upon. I mean, if you go out in bum shorts or anything, you will probably get called nasty names and jeered at and some may go as far as chasing you away. So when you have something short on and you want to...

I Rebuke This Finite State Of Mind,
It seems that even though Malawian society is pulling out of the Dark Ages and becoming more contemporary, there are a number of Malawians out there that seem to still possess archaic notions.
For example, this guy whose name I don’t know but see around, well he knows my name and what not.i don’t know where he got my details from. Anyway, after my final exam this week, he came and basically said...

Embrace Your Inner Flawful Goddess!
It seems women are convinced that true beauty lies only within the confines of the established, not realising that the fact that they don’t fit into that box is what makes them beautiful to begin with.
Why should we lose the curves and strive to be a Size Zero?
Why must we put ourselves through eating disorders because we want to be rail thin like runway models?
Why must we undergo plastic...

There's An Achimwene Somewhere Out There Too
When most people think of gender-based violence victims, it’s usually women that first spring into mind. We don’t take into account that men too are abused in their homes.
I’ll give you an example. Here in Malawi, we have a newspaper cartoon called Achimwene, which means brother in Chichewa. Now the thing with Achimwene is, he’s always getting beaten up by his wife. The cartoons are funny of...

The Story Of Mocha; Undefeated She Stood.
Let me tell you a little story. Although this is not MY story, it’s a true one. I heard it straight from the horse’s mouth, or should I say the mare’s mouth seeing as it was a woman who told it to me. Whatever. Anyway, this woman, I’m not sure if she’d like me to put her name up so we from this point forth we shall call her Mocha.
Anyway, when Mocha was about 12 or so, she went to school in...

Writer's Block. AAARRGGHH!!
Blank.
Desperately. Trying to
Find the words to write. I
Think of an idea and write it
Down and just as quickly as it was thought of,
I scribble it out.

Soldiers; The Forgotten Victims
Well, well well. Before I go on, let me just say sorry for not having blogged sooner. I queued a number of quotes and things but it seems they ran out. I’ve had and still have exams but I logged in the other day and saw how empty my blog looked so I thought why not put up a new post? I’m a little selective of what I put on here so I had to think long and hard about this post. Anyway, I’ve been...
