We Dope Like That- Poem by Malawian Student...
Speedin’ down life’s slopes with no brakes,
Forget about the implications of our mistakes,
Wouldn’t even spend a second to consider cause,
We dope like that.
Who needs school when you can make easy money off
drugs,
We love being gangsters and hangin’ with thugs,
And forget what your parents say cause
We dope like that.
So H.I.V is out there, we’ll all die one day anyway, so if i
get it...

I WILL Wait (A Semi-Pointless Semi-Rant)
So when I went to my fund-raiser on Saturday, a girl named Tchiyiwe read out this amazing poem. Not her own but that poem SPOKE to me in a way few poems have ever done before. I felt like the universe had touched our lives (mine and Tchiyiwe’s) so that the vibrations of it’s caress could lead up to that very moment when she read her poem.
So this poem was titled I Will Wait For You....
You’ve only got three choices in life; give up, give in or give it all...

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t…
Yeah But That's White People Music Though
Y’know, I’m pretty open-minded when it comes to…. Pretty much anything. And one of the things I love, because it’s such a diverse subject, is music. Blues, rap, hip-hop, RnB, soul, jazz etc. If I like the song, I like it. If I don’t, I don’t. Simple, straight forward. The genre has nothing to do with it. So it amazes me when I tell people that I love rock music,...

Whoooooo!!
So today I finally met Q Malewezi, poet extrodinaire. It was just an amazing experience being in his presence. Guy just has a way of capturing the audience. Trust me, even if you go with a hardened heart he just has this WAY of making you listen.
Also, I met this lovely poet named Dave and hopefully he’ll email me soon so I can post some of his work here. He’s awesome too. I remember...

Sweet Nothings by Q Malewezi
Something needs to be next to nothing to be something
So when she told me that he meant nothing I wasn’t too
bothered
I still loved her because she had that special something
That made me into her nothing for her to be something
And ‘nothing’ became her favourite word when I asked her
What they were talking about or what she was doing or
thinking
So I decided to do something about my...
My Comfort Zone- Unknown
I used to have a comfort zone
where I knew I wouldn’t fail.
The same four walls and busywork
were really more like jail.
I longed so much to do the things I’d never done before,
But stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old
floor.
I said it didn’t matter that I wasn’t doing much.
I said I didn’t care for things like commission checks and such.
I...

Red Army: Let The Marching Begin
I don’t usually write about political issues because my blog is all about Malawian as well as other world cultures. But I’d be a fool if I sat and chose to stay silent over something that is affecting this nation like advanced leprosy.
For a while now, things here in Malawi have been anything but okay. We have fuel and forex shortages not to mention inadequate water and electricity...
To know and not do is to not know.
Two young black men, dressed like most young men (of every color) dress are followed around Publix by a white worker who seems to think they’re going to steal something. They purposely allow him to know he’s being recorded in hopes that it will stop, but he continues to follow them anyway all the way to the counter. They stopped him and asked him why he was following them and he said “I can go...

Don't You. Ever. Get Too. Comfortable.
One thing that I’ve noticed, not just from random people but also my family and friends, is what I refer to as “Comfortability Syndrome”; the mentality that if you’re living and breathing and don’t go without food a day then you’re good. It’s so sad that people lack curiosity to delve into the unknown but also the drive to want MORE from life.
I know a...

And Just Who One Earth Said You Had To Go To...
Y’know, Malawi has lots of talent. So much talent in fact, that our borders are bursting at the seams with it. Problem is, we fail to realise just HOW MUCH we could do with ourselves.
I remember I was having a conversation with the lovely Atu, mochagoddess.tumblr.com, about how Malawian parents shove education down their children’s throats without even trying to consider what else...

Happy Independence Day To ALL Malawians Out There
Woooohhooooo! The 6th of July is finally here!!
47 years ago to this day, Malawi (which means Flames) gained her independence from the British. We were formerly known as “Nyasaland” which means (the land of the lake).
Anyway, all celebratory feelings aside, how far have we come as a nation and how far have we yet to go?
From the autocratic reign of the late Dr. Hastings Kamuzu...
